Change your device settings
to avoid automatically
connecting to nearby
networks.
Mobile hotspots offer an
alternative if a VPN is not
an option. Mobile data is
usually encrypted and thus a
more secure avenue than an
open Wi-Fi network anyone
can access.
Browser warnings are there
for a reason. If you see a
notification the site you're
getting ready to visit is
potentially malicious, don't
go to it. Use only secure
https:// sites when on open
networks.
Force encryption when you can
through trusted plug-ins for
your browser (Force-TLS and
HTTPS-Everywhere are
recommended options by the
Federal Trade Commission).
Don't access private
information (financial,
legal, personal,
credentials, client data,
etc.)
Be
sure to log off the network
and never stay signed in
unless you are on a
password-secured channel.
